A PRACTICAL WEBSITE PLANNING GUIDE

What affects the cost of a business website?

There is no useful universal price for every website. A clear quotation connects the work to your business needs and separates one-time development from ongoing costs.

Pages matter, but complexity matters too.

Ten similar informational pages may use one consistent pattern. A single page with complex filtering, integrations or a custom quoting tool may require more work. Ask what each part needs to do, not just how many pages are included.

Content preparation also affects scope. Existing copy and usable images create a different starting point from a project that needs new writing, photography or translated content.

Design and editing requirements shape the approach.

A focused site with a few stable pages can have different technical needs from a frequently updated catalogue. WordPress may suit a content-managed site; an online store requires additional product and checkout planning.

Custom layouts, reusable editing components and accessibility requirements should be discussed early. The goal is to make useful choices rather than add features simply because they are available.

Stores and integrations add decisions.

Product variants, catalogues, shipping, payments and store operations need to be scoped together. Third-party systems can have subscription charges, limitations and setup requirements.

Confirm which integrations are included, who supplies accounts and what test scenarios will be completed. Avoid treating a broad phrase such as “payment integration” as a complete specification.

Separate development and recurring costs.

Domain renewal, hosting, ecommerce plans, paid plugins, email services and ongoing support can continue after launch. Ask for these items to be identified and clarify who pays each provider.

For international work, agree the quotation currency and payment terms. Do not rely on estimated conversions as a substitute for a clear proposal.

A phased scope can make a project more manageable.

Start with the information and contact route your customers need most. A later phase may introduce additional content, languages, integrations or operational tools.

Compare quotations by agreed deliverables, exclusions, review rounds and handover responsibilities. A lower headline price is difficult to judge without that context.
